You read that right - these two are made of cat hair. My cat hair bunny, on top, is the best sculpture I've made so far. The hen is a close second. My mother has made a peep and several cats out of them. The toothpick is for size comparison.

Here's some background info. We discovered that cat hair, and other fluffy undercoat like hair, can become thick and durable when compacted. Several years ago a dustbunny of cat hair got tumbled in the dryer. It got stuck in a pocket and, when I wore the clothing, I found it. I wasn't disgusted, just amused. The experimenting began. If you roll a ball of fine hair in your hands, lightly at first, it takes a round shape. Then, increase the pressure slowly until you're rolling as hard as you can. Sometimes you need water to keep the ball in the center of your palms. When you're done, you have a hard ball, thicker than a pom-pom and much more sturdy. It can be frayed and used in sculpture then! Dog hair doesn't work, a friend of mine has already tried it (unless you have a thin haired dog.) I use a wire brush to brush my cat Furby, which leaves the hair in loose strips and good for rolling. Try it if you like!
