Artist's Comments

I love to paint animals that are a challenging because few artists would attempt such complicated images. My most complex painting yet has to be this one: “Crustacean Salutation.” The subject is a giant Japanese spider crab, seen at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, GA. It’s the largest arthropod (the animal family that includes crab, shrimp, insects, and spiders) in the world. These mammoth crabs have unusually long legs and each leg has been reported to grow as long as six feet! Their spiky, dome shaped bodies can measure 15 inches on their own. They typically weigh in at 40 pounds and are strict scavengers, cleaning the ocean floor of dead animals and the occasional mollusk. Japanese spider crabs are not often hunted by man because they live 150 to 1,000 feet below the ocean. These crabs are well suited for their life as bottom feeders though; whenever they molt their shells they will eat it to absorb the nutrients from it! Unfortunately, they are considered a delicacy in Japan – when and if they can be caught. Despite that, these giants are not endangered and if left alone they can live to be a 100 years old! The giant Japanese spider crab may not be in danger of extinction, but it’d still be nice to see them greeting people in the future for centuries to come.

Crustacean Salutation is a portrait of a Japanese spider crab.

The detail *ART-fromthe-HEART puts into her painting is, as always, exceptional. Here, maybe even more than usual. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of a crab with enough detail that each individual joint is visible, and I certainly haven't seen the texture so effectively shown.

What's more, as the creature stares out with its beady little eyestalks and waves a claw at its audience, *ART-fromthe-HEART adds a bit of history about her subject, informing us on the niceties of the species.

And, behind the crab, something lurks in the darkness ...

Oh wow... this is so cool! I recently saw this guys dancing against the glass wall at the Long Beach Aquarium. They were so fun to watch. You did an excellent job rendering the color and detail!

Thanks! That painting was really hard...the colors, the intricate lines and details...I saw the guy at the Georgia Aquarium and he waved when I took a reference picture. ^_^

I love all your paintings, I admire your work. I never was one for painting or anything beyond drawing untill second semester in school last year. I didnt start anything colourful until then. I have painted a couple pictures since then *none too fancy* and I only started digital work at the beggining of summer. :) but I have fallen in love with it. Colors just make things all the more better to look at. And now I am moving towards trying sculpture, just need to get the supplies. The best thing is you can use anything and I have plans to use some of my snake's old skin to make a dragon.

Yeah, we're always learning! Thanks! I wish you success with all that you experiment and do! That snake skin dragon is going to be neat! I never considered using that as a sculpting medium (then again, I only find wild snake skins and I won't use them.) GOOD LUCK!!!! :D :D :D

Holy mother of god that looks like it was hard!! Im a real amateur painter myself and i can only imagine how long that took! You are really skilled! Label me dead on impressed!
:iconart-fromthe-heart:
LOL! Thank you! It was, seriously one of the hardest paintings of 2007. So many sections! :fear: I think it took around 37 hours...a lot comparitively, but I've got a couple that have passed that since then.

You have an impressive gallery too! Keep on drawing (and coloring, you're real good at it)! Your dragons are COOL! :D

:D I like to paint things others haven't before - makes it interesting! I mean, who else has seen the underside of a crab like that? :highfive:
