The Heron Pheonix by ART-fromthe-HEART The Heron Pheonix by ART-fromthe-HEART
Gone but not forgotten. Slain, but will rise again.

This Great Blue Heron Phoenix sculpture was inspired by a true story of heartbreak. On my parent's 130 nature preserve, while riding the trails to check for anything amiss, they saw a large flopping thing in the large field. They approached it to find a great blue heron, unable to fly. We knew this heron. He'd been visiting our pond for over 6 years. I have photos of him gracefully standing in shallow water and flying over my head on great grey wings. Upon close inspection, the heron's leg was severed from what appeared to be a gunshot. In our backwoods area, it's common that idiot rednecks shoot at buzzards and high flying birds (despite it being illegal, all birds are protected.) We were mortified. My mother carefully cradled the bird in her arms. It was too tired to even struggle. We put it in a carrier and watched it overnight, since the wildlife rehab center had closed and wouldn't open until the next morning... but it died during the night. The loss angered and saddened me for weeks. There's nothing we could do to track who shot him. That was it, the majestic bird was gone.

In my grief I made this sculpture to honor the great blue heron. He will rise again in memory and through art. Rest in peace.

This sculpture is made of 6 gourds, wire, and clay. He stands 17" tall and is available in my online shop >>> www.squareup.com/store/carabevan

Like Escaron said, the feathers are great. Such a sad backstory to this though. People can be such assholes, un-empathetic to life around them. If you want to play with moving targets, get a paint gun and run around in the woods like the rest of us.

Exactly. I like to hope that mother nature (and karma) will get the shooter back big time. That makes me feel better at least. :stare:

Maybe birds can poop on them everyday. Sounds like a survive-able plague. :XD:

:la: THANK YOUUUUU!
I loved doing all those feathers. You know a thing or two about going detail crazy with those. ;) LOL. I think it took around 30 hours overall, which isn't that long considering!
